Review: Blue by Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond

Quick Info:

Book type: Picture Book—Non Fiction

Target Age: 4-8 years old

Recommended Age: None

Plot: A poetic telling of the history of the color blue

Review:

It started off very normal and informative, the poetry was nice and was very interesting to hear the history how humanity got their hands on the color blue. However, it takes a strangely spiritual turn around the end where it talked about how historically the color blue is considered “holy” or connecting to God. There’s also a couple of mentions of mythology. The biggest grievance was the erasure of Palestine as the author mentions Israel 3 times in this book.

Opinion:

I wouldn’t recommend this book mainly due to the erasure of Palestine.

Content:

  • Mentions of slavery in the sense of the more evil side of the indigo industry

  • Mentions of people’s belief of protection with use of blue stones (in an informative way)

  • Mentions warding off evil spirits in a cultural way through use of blue dye (in an informative way)

  • A bit of a spiritual/mystical vibe to the whole book while still remaining informative.

  • Mention of urine

  • Erasure of Palestine

Excerpts:

Excerpts from books are a glimpse of the content that is found and are not every instance of un-Islamic and/or “iffy” content.
